We welcome any new members who would like to join us or come along and see what we do. Please feel free to turn up on the day!
The Cambridge Jazz Co-op is an active group of keen amateur jazz musicians who meet most Saturday mornings in Cambridge, England, to share their enthusiasm for playing modern jazz, usually working with (often prestigious) guest professional jazz musicians as tutors.
The Cambridge Jazz Co-op is a non-profit organisation run solely by its members, open to all jazz musicians of all levels.
You are very welcome to join us!
There are NO minimum standards (But we mostly have a few years experience on our instruments, are reasonably chord and scale literate, mostly (but not all) able to read music, and, most importantly of all, know and love, and want to know more about, jazz.)
See our current programme for more details.
Taking place in the Man On The Moon pub, Norfolk St, sessions usually start at 11:00 and finish around 13:30 with a small break for coffee at about 12:30.
Each session is a mere £10 for over 2 hours tuition and advice from some of the best pro jazz musicians in Britain.
Additionally, an annual membership fee (£10.00) is required to help support us in our non-profit activity.
Each morning is typically attended by around ten to fifteen musicians playing a range of musical instruments (such as sax, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass and drums) with everyone getting a chance to work on their skills, solo and play ensemble.
Programme
For much of the year the sessions are led by professional tutors often of international stature. The content of the sessions always varies, but typically tutors bring along several pieces of music to play that explore some aspect of jazz such as rhythm, harmony or improvisation. Sometimes we play original compositions by the tutor themselves.
We are NOT a big band, the attendance and line up varying on a weekly basis. We are not limited to ‘one of each’ instrument, either. We all try to pitch in cooperatively!
During the summer, sessions are generally led by Co-op regulars who bring along music of their choice to play in a group environment.
For details, see our current programme.
Master Classes
Several times a year a professional tutor of particularly high standing is invited to give a master class in the afternoon; these occur after the normal morning session.
Previous master classes have been given by such luminaries as Alan Barnes, Pete King, John Etheridge, Mark Nightingale, Greg Abate & John Parricelli. (Click on the last two to see actual extracts of their masterclasses with us!)
Master Classes are priced individually, but are usually in the region of £15.00.
